I received my new UX303UA (Skylake) and was able to get acquainted with it. Lovely machine overall. I was a little concerned before I bought it, as I had read about problems with reproducing Yellows on some of these Zenbooks (people say that yellow looks more like green).
Well, here is a comparison shot of three displays showing the exact same picture.
Displays are: Asus UX303UA Sony Vaio SVS131190x Dell 23inch IPS monitor.
As you can see the colors on the Zenbook are really close, if not identical to the Dell IPS monitor (and the Sony is utterly abysmal). Actual yellow Volvo thrown in there for good measure.
I purchased the ASUS Zenbook UX303UB because I needed a replacement laptop that I could keep for a while. I wanted a device that was at the top of the market currently but in 4 years would not be a horrible PC. I believe I have found that in this laptop/ultrabook. I am a software engineer and IT instructor so I needed a device that could be flexible enough for me to host a class on the go, but powerful enough to handle all the Visual Studio coding and SQL querying I could throw at it. I needed something that was fast, but also was expandable (not many laptops/ultrabooks allow for expansion). The graphics card is not the best, but it is great for me where I am mainly watching Netflix and YouTube.
The 12 GB of RAM, I7 processor, and 512GB SSD are very nice. The device powers on and wakes from sleep mode very quickly. The touchscreen is accurate and responsive. I was looking into purchasing the surface book, but when I broke everything down I would have had to get the most expensive on which was $3k+. I got the same thing here (minus 4GB of RAM and the disconnect ability of the undocking mode) for almost $2k less. I will just invest in a tablet if I feel that I need one, but otherwise I'm good with my purchase and would buy it again.
I'm starting to think I'm crazy. I've had this laptop for 24 hours and I'm so frustrated that it's about to be boxed up and shipped back. It's beautiful. It really is.The reviews were positive.I want so badly to keep it but I can help feeling like ASUS has let me down on this one. The main reason for this purchase was to have a laptop I could run Lightroom and Photoshop without jumping into MacBook. This was an alternative. I installed Lightroom last night. Today, it's taking a minimum of 2 minutes and 51 seconds to open the program. It seems like the i7 teamed up with sufficient memory and SSD should do better. It's not. At times, this machine is completely unresponsive. Am I missing something here?Is it McAfee?ASUS, I need your help or this is going back.
This is what the Amazon discription said: ASUS ZenBook UX303UA 13.3-Inch FHD Touchscreen Laptop, Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10 (64 bit) This is a complete lie. When I received the laptop it had Windows 7 (not Windows 10) installed. It had 5 CD's/DVD's in the box. No explanation what they were for or how to use them. No explanation that you needed to buy an external DVD ROM if you want Windows 10 installed. I would have purchased a DVD ROM when I bought the laptop if I knew in advance. I had to wait 5 extra days to get one delivered due to the Christmas holiday.
There were no instructions in the box or on the ASUS website on how to install Windows 10. This is a total crock of BullPucky!!! I started loading the different DVD's until finally one of them loaded a setup screen for Windows 10. I had to guess which DVD needed to be loaded next to finish the install. After much confusion I finally got Windows 10 installed.
After the install, Guess What? No Touchscreen. I did an online chat with ASUS's support department. They told me the laptop does not support Touchscreen. This is unacceptable!!! I'm never buying anything made by ASUS for the rest of my lifetime. I've been ripped off!!! Never again. The one star is for ASUS's complete lack of instructions.
Enough of my rant. I can live without Touchscreen. Cleaning the fingerprints off the screen would be a pain. My tablet's screen gets wasted from my greasy fingers.
Other than the Touchscreen lie, I'm very happy with the laptop. I would give it a 4-5 star rating performance wise. With the SSD Drive, Windows 10 boots in about 20 seconds. Love it. Since it's light weight, and I slouch down in my overstuffed livingroom chair, it makes for a great BellyTop computer. I purchased a ASUS SDRW-08U9M-U/BLK 13mm External DVD Writer designd for the ZenBook.
I've had the UX303U for a month (purchased from Amazon.ca) and am finding it to be essentially flawless. Following is my story in brief.
In late 2012, I purchased an earlier zenbook (UX31A) and liked it very much but there were multiple nagging issues (jumpy touch pad even after updating drivers, difficulty connecting to bluetooth speakers, spotty wifi performance; specific keys no longer working until after a reboot, and eventually the control keys stopped working altogether which made cut/paste more cumbersome).
Despite the issues with the 31A, I liked much about it and thought I'd give the latest ASUS zenbook a try based on earlier reviews here on Amazon. Of all the issues I experienced with the 31A, not a single one has crept up with the 303U. Perhaps the most important things are the keyboard and touch pad are essentially flawless (i.e. not jumpy in the least) and the Gigabit Wifi on the 303U provides me with a vastly improved experienced. I pay for a 100 mbps download from my ISP, and I now consistently get speeds in excess of 120 mbps. Unlike the wifi experience with the 31A, this wifi never drops a connection anywhere in the house (which is over 100 years old and has plaster walls which can be more problematic for wifi). Bottom line is that there's not a single thing I can identify as being problematic and this is by far the best machine I've ever owned.
Windows 10 note: When purchasing the 31A three years ago, I made sure to get it with Windows 7 because I wanted to avoid Window 8. The UX303 comes loaded with Windows 10 and I've found the transition from Win 7 to Win 10 absolutely painless. I'm no fan of Microsoft, but they've really done a nice job with Win 10.
One thing to note is that the left and right buttons on the touch pad are stiffer relative to the 31A and that when hosting webinars people have told me that my clicks are rather loud. I've gotten around this by simply using an external mouse.
I chose this laptop because it is light and portable but is also quite powerful. So far, I am greatly enjoying my experience with it.
Pros: - Trakpad, touchscreen, and keyboard are quite responsive - 12GB of ram and i7 processor offers fast processing power and good preformance - Solid State Drive gives quick read/write times - QHD display is very nice to the eye -Battery life is around 6 hours based off of normal use - During regular use, the fans and heat put out by the laptop are virtually non-existent
Cons: - The colour yellow isn't quite accurate. On the Zenbook it is more of a mustard yellow. - Screen can be a little bit reflective - On some applications, namely older ones, the QHD screen resolution will cause them to look blurry and/or have scaling issues.
It was a perfect laptop, a huge upgrade for me but the only problem was that it was shipped to me with a damaged battery. It wouldn't charge and couldn't hold a charge so I was stuck to the wall outlet no matter what. I returned and got a new unit and it was perfect! The one thing that I found annoying was that the asus sticker on the top left corner is so sticky it leaves so much sticky residue behind and I really had to work to get it off without damaging the screen. The laptop is super lightweight and weighs less than my textbooks. I can run games on here too, even though it has a lower graphics card. I can play things like dishonered and skyrim or league of legends all on medium or high graphics. It definitely can't handle too much intense-graphic games though. It also heats up quite a bit, not to the point where it burns my hands, but hot enough for it to be uncomfortable. The upside is that it has a really soft fan, not noisy at all, but because of that it does heat up fast depending on how hard you're working it. It only gets hot by the gap between the keyboard and the hinges to the screen and the upper bottom part of the laptop. Keyboard is great! Due to the beauty of the SSD, it kicks up within seconds. I love it! There isn't a problem with the hinges coming loose but the screen does shake quite a bit. It doesn't really bother me though, not unless I'm focusing on the shakiness of the screen.
I was looking for a laptop that I could game on but also completely school work and finacial work on and have it be light enough to carry it around everywhere I go, but with lightweight laptops, you sacrifice the size and a lack of a graphics card. But with a bigger laptop and better graphics card (or at least to have one that could run games decently), it means that I have to sacrifice the light weight of a laptop. This was definitely the perfect compromise. Not the thinnest laptop out there or the lightest, but light enough that you don't notice it in your backpack and still have a decent enough graphics card that you can game with!
If you're always on-the-go for school or work and would love to run games and have decent gameplay, this is the laptop for you 🙂
I really only have good things to say about this product with a few gripes. I bought this laptop as a primary use for school and some designing and editing projects throughout the year. It was a toss up between the XPS 13 and this lovely machine. I chose this machine because it was a way better bang for you buck. That being said these are a few of my thoughts so far, I've owned it close to a month now so keep that in mind.
- The screen is very good. The touchscreen makes the panel glossy which is a bit annoying at times if you have a lot of light in the room, but it isnt anything that cant be remedied by moving or tilting the screen. I love the touchscreen ability, I thought I wouldn't care for it but I find myself using it a lot for scrolling and basic things that would take a split second longer if I was to use a track pad. - The speed is unquestionable. The processor is blazing quick especially if you're really only using this for entertainment, school work and some basic editing and photo manipulation. - Battery life is pretty good. Being honest this is probably my only gripe with this machine. The battery seems to last close to 6 hours or less depending on usage. Don't expect to hit over 6 hours with this thing unless you're ready to have one tab open at a time with lowest brightness. I really wish the battery life was a bit better, it might be something within windows 10 but I honestly doubt it. This really is my only real disappointment with the machine. -Lastly build quality is superb. I love the look of this thing, very clean minimal and just sleek. The keyboard is excellent same with the back lighting. The track pad is also very good despite some gesture cut outs that have happened like once a week (Solved by a reboot). And overall the tracking is very on point. The memory on the machine is also very good, 256gb is a little small for me but its nothing that cant be solved by an external HD for my less necessary files.
Overall I really recommend the ASUS UX303UA because of the great quality you get for a very good price point. If you're looking for a great computer with awesome specs for a good price, you are at the right place. I highly recommend this product for students and will probably get an ASUS product for my next ultrabook in a few years.
